This course is designed to equip newly chosen Congresspersons with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to navigate their new roles effectively.

Hour 1: Understanding the Legislative Process and Introduction to Congress

30 minutes: The Legislative Process

  • Steps from bill introduction to becoming law.
  • The role of committees and subcommittees.
  • The importance of bipartisan collaboration.
  • Assignment: Read Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution.

Engaging with Constituents

30 minutes: Constituent Services and Communication

    • Understanding the needs of your constituents.
    • Tools for effective communication (newsletters, social media, town halls).
    • The importance of transparency and accessibility.

Hour 2: Building Community Relationships

30 minutes: Establishing local offices and staff

  • Engaging with local organizations and stakeholders.
  • Managing public expectations and addressing concerns.
  • Assignment: Create a draft plan for your first town hall meeting.

    • Understanding your staff’s roles and responsibilities.

Hour 4: Leadership and Advocacy

  • Developing your leadership style.
  • Building coalitions and advocating for your priorities.
  • Long-term planning and goal setting for your term.

30 minutes: Course Review and Enrollment

  • Review key points of the syllabus.
  • Take and pass the entrance exam for enrollment into the lottery.
